Grapevine: Basket + Wreath

Wild grapevine grows in abundance in rural eastern Ontario. It's a wonderful material for weaving baskets, wreaths, and garden trellises. It’s durable, and grows back readily, making it a renewable material to work with.

Fall is ideal for harvesting wild grapevines fresh. Fruits have ripened and have been harvested, the leaves begin to dieback and fall off as the sap returns to the roots to prepare for winter. Younger shoots that grew for the season are easily pliable and wonderful to work with.

Join us for a day of hands-on learning about wild grapevine: harvesting it, weaving a basket and a wreath frame, and learning how to use grapevine to construct a garden trellis. No experience needed, this workshop is beginner-friendly, suitable for ages 12 and up.

You'll leave with a completed basket, and a wreath frame you can dress up for the holidays. Building a trellis will be demonstrated, if time allows.

Harvesting the grapevine requires walking on uneven ground and untangling vines by hand.

This is an intimate group, no more than 10 people.

All materials are included. Bring garden shears or snippers, and twist ties, if you have them.

The workshop will be outdoors, so dress for the weather and for harvesting grapevine.
