The first basket

It is often the first basket that anyone makes is the beginning of becoming a basket maker. In Canada, we have no basket making schools and so the first basket made is usual in a basket making class.

These classes are usually run by continuing education programs, summer courses or evening programs or advertised by local basket makers. Word of mouth is the best way to spread the word.

Now you have made your first basket. You are encouraged and excited by the prospect and eagerly look forward to making another, either in a class with a friend or by yourself.  One basket leads to another, and another and another. Your interest awakens and you start giving away baskets to friends and family as you have no more room in your house! It is then that the idea comes to you that you might sell some to pay the expense of buying basket materials. Now it is time to think where to sell those baskets and the best solution is to visit various Craft shows, Craft shops and perhaps join together with another basket maker.

Exploring the local Craft markets is interesting as costs vary depending on location and size.

Events are typically one day, a weekend or several days. Some shows are juried and require a photo to see a sample of your work and may also require a bio.

Prices vary from a standard fee to giving a percentage of your sales.

Some shows provide a tent, a table, and a chair, some just a space. The best idea is to visit several shows, and also to talk to other vendors to ensure it’s a market where people will be interested in purchasing baskets.

While this is going on, you need to start building up your inventory!

For those who are local, come visit us at the McDonalds Corners Agricultural Fair tomorrow.
