Threads 42: Two 'easy to make' rush mats

In this edition of Threads, we continue the theme of basketry items around the house. There are two rush mats which can be made in different sizes for different uses in your home.

Part 1- Round Woven Mat

To make this mat you will need eight strong rushes, and make a square center with 4/4 pattern.

Alternate the tips and butts. You will also need a bundle of long fine rushes for weaving.

All rushes must have been dried, and then mellowed before using.

To start weaving: Bend a rush in half and start pairing around the base steaks dividing them into pairs. After a couple of rounds divide the pairs into single stakes. Overlap the weavers to join, trying to maintain an even size.

To make the border: Take each stake and go behind in front behind the next one. Thread in the last one and keep the pattern. Trim all the ends and enjoy.

Part 2 - Round Braided Rush Mat
This is an unusual rush mat as it is made without using a needle to stitch it together. I was shown it many years ago by Olivia Elton Barrett. She told us it was a very ancient technique.

Here are her instructions below.
