Threads 110 - Mexican baskets part two

This is the second Threads devoted to Mexican baskets. Below is a large multi-use carrying basket that could be used for shopping or a picnic. As discussed in Threads 109, this basket is also machine stitched together, starting with an oval base and continuing up the sides. There is a band of natural colour and pattern on the side.

I believe the large round handles are handmade and then stitched firmly to the sides just inside. There are two pieces of Velcro to keep the basket closed. It feels like a strong well-made basket.

These are photos of a child’s basket that is made using an oval shape piece with two small oval inserts on either side. The round handles are stitched on either side. And again, a small piece of Velcro holds the two sides together.

The coiled basket feels very strong and tightly made. The lid of the basket slides up and down on the leather strap which is held in position with a fastener clip. on both sides. The decoration on the front of the basket has obviously been made and then stitched on afterwards. I wonder if this was intended for a child’s basket or a shoulder basket for an adult. It is very strong and tightly woven.
